Softwood Turnings

Howdy!  To me softwoods are cottonwood and hackberry.  Elm falls into this as well.  There are others, of course but those are the two softwoods that I turn.  Also you need to include cedar in this category.    Both cottonwood and hackberry are fibrous woods and take a great deal of sanding to make them smooth.  But, no matter how you try there will always be what is called burring on them.  But, that just adds some character I think.  Enjoy!

Hackberry can be a very good looking wood on it’s own.  Just look at the natural colors with the spalting added by Mamma Nature!  That is a look that is hard to beat.  Some folks might not even want to put anything in it as it looks so good.  But, hey!  I design my turnings to be used, so please put this beauty to work.  The wood was sealed with a couple of coats of food grade walnut oil.  After that was soaked in good the finishing was done with a walnut oil/shellac mixture.  When using a combination such as that gives the dish a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  The diameter of the dish is 1 ¾” with a height of 1 ¾” and a depth of 1”.  As it is not meant to hold liquids I didn’t get a volume measurement.  Personally I can see this dish sitting on a coffee table full of chips with a bowl full of salsa or guacamole along side of it.  Yummy!!!  24Nov19  SDHB6  $40.00  Free standard shipping within Continental United States.  All other locations contact me with your zip code for shipping costs.

If you happen to have a large table, and happen to like colorful wood then this hackberry serving dish is an item you will certainly want.  Just look at the natural colors along with some spalting, even some knot holes.  The grain patterns just kinda swirl around really adding to the attractiveness of this dish.  Though it was not meant to hold liquids, it does hold 1 gallon.  It held that amount with no leakage for about ½ an hour.  You will find of course some natural defects in the wood which I smoothed out with sanding.  There was even a couple of pith spots (soft spots) in the wood which are just fine after being soaked thoroughly with shellac.  The wood was first sealed with two coats of food grade walnut oil.  After that the finishing was done with several coats of a walnut oil/shellac mixture.  Using this combination gives the dish a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  The diameter is 16” with a height of 2 ½” and a depth of a bit over 1 ¾”.   Great centerpiece for displaying all kinds of goodies, and would actually work well as a family sized popcorn server.  19Nov19  SDHB5  $72.50   Free standard shipping within Continental United States.  All other locations contact me with your zip code for shipping costs.

I don’t usually turn a bowl of this size anymore unless it is custom ordered.  But, once in a while I turn one just so I can say I did.  Never hurts to have one in case someone needs it, does it?  This bowl is simply rustic.  After all you have nice coloration and worm holes.  The worm holes that went all the way through were sealed in filled with clear glue along with natural dust and coffee grounds.  This bowl is great sized for larger tables as a centerpiece for fruits and such, or a large salad bowl, and don’t forget it can be used as a popcorn bowl!  Never forget the popcorn.  The diameter of the bowl is 14 ¼” with a height of 4 ¼”.  The depth is 3 ¼” and the volume measured at 1 gallon.  That’s a lot, folks!  The wood after initial sanding was wet sanded with walnut oil to get the smoothest surfaces possible with this wood.  Cottonwood is a rather soft and somewhat fibrous wood so it can be difficult to get a totally smooth surface.  The sealing was done with food grade walnut oil and then the finishing was done with a mixture of walnut oil, shellac, and a walnut oil based wax.  Using this combination gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  4Nov19  BLCW106  $65.00  Free standard shipping within Continental United States.  All other locations contact me with your zip code for shipping costs.

With the distinct ribbing on the outside there is no doubt you will find this mid sized serving bowl charming.  Turned from cottonwood which is the poplar family of trees can be beautiful.  A somewhat soft wood that has a fibrous quality to it, it was a very useful wood to the westward bound settlers in America.  Where there were cottonwood trees, there was water.  Simple as that as they only grow in wet areas.  And, the settlers made great use of the wood making bowls, plates, and all sorts of utensils and other wares.  This bowl is 9” in diameter, with a height of 3” and a depth of 2 ¼”.  The volume of the bowl measured to 5 cups to the brim.  The wood was dry sanded and then to get a good smooth surface it was wet sanded with sandpaper and walnut oil.  With softer woods this has proven to be a great help.  The sealing was done with food grade walnut oil and then finished with shellac mixed with a walnut oil based wax.  All of these natural ingredients in combination give the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  2Nov19  BLCW105  $35.00  Free standard shipping within Continental United States.  All other locations contact me with your zip code for shipping costs.

Cottonwood can be a most attractive wood.  It can also be a bit difficult to get nice, smooth surfaces on as well.  This is due to it being soft and fibrous.  But, with luck you won’t get too many tear outs in it.  This bowl has a little bit in it but I was able to sand most of it down.  Leaving a little bit gives a nice rustic appearance to the bowl.  And, we all know I love rustic, handmade look.  This bowl is perfect for putting goodies of all varieties in.  Whether the goodies be tasty treats like candy or nuts, or may they be keys and change.  Some might even put potpourri in it.  The length is 8” with a width of 5 ½”.  The highest point is 3” and the low part of the brim is 2 ½”.  The depth is 1 ¾” and the volume is 2 cups measured to the low brim.  The wood was wet sanded and sealed with food grade walnut oil.  Soft woods get wet sanded with the oil sometimes to help eliminate some of the tear out.  The finishing was done with a combination of shellac and a wax that is walnut oil based.  Using this mixture gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  28Oct19  BLCW104  $32.50  Free standard shipping within Continental United States.  All other locations contact me with your zip code for shipping costs.

Cottonwood has such great coloration to it.  The light and dark colors meld together so well, it makes you not want to put anything in the bowl.  You just want to look at the wood.  Lightweight yet durable, this wood was quite popular in America with the westward migration.  When settlers were traveling west, when they saw cottonwood trees they knew there was water.  They used the wood for plates, bowls, utensils, furniture and other useful items.  This bowl is 9 ½” in diameter, 3” high, and 2 ¼” deep.  The volume measured to 6 cups.  The bowl does hold liquids so feel free to use it for pretty much anything.  You will also find a nice handling lip midway up the sides.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a mixture of walnut oil, shellac, and walnut oil based wax.  This bowl has a certain rustic appeal to it with the natural colors and wood defects that are natural with this wood.  You will find some burring areas that are inherent with this wood.  This just adds to the appeal of the piece.  10Jun19  BLCW101  $35.00  Free Standard Shipping within Continental United States.

Cottonwood is a good looking and durable wood.  Even though it is relatively soft, it holds up well.  Settlers heading west used it for most everything.  This bowl holds a goodly amount of 5 cups measured to the brim.  The natural light color mixed with the grays make this attractive.  I think you find this fits into most decors.  The bowl is 9 ¼” in diameter, 2 ¾” high and has a depth of a little over 2”.  The bottom has a slight concave to it so that makes it just right.  The wood was first sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a mixture of walnut oil and shellac.  This combination gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  This bowl will work very well as a medium sized serving bowl, display bowl for fruits and nuts, or even a popcorn bowl.  2May18  BLCW94  $27.50  $11.00 S&H

When you look at this bowl turned from cottonwood, you might wonder why you don’t already have one.  It is a great looking wood and sorta gives off a warm feeling.  Now some folks will say it looks fun, but to me it’s warm.  Of course those who know me will tell you I am so far from politically correct I barely know how to spell it.  Measured to the brim this bowl holds a nice amount of 5 cups.  Not saying you can’t pile the salad up higher than the brim, or for that matter smashed spuds.  It would work well as a popcorn bowl, too.  The bowl is 11 ½” in diameter, 1 ¾” high, and has a depth of 1”.  The wood was sealed with two coats of food grade walnut oil and then finished with a walnut oil based wax.  This combination gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  Lightweight as well as durable, don’t pass this bowl up.  4Dec17  BLCW89  $35.00 and $12.00 S&H

Are you looking for a medium sized wood bowl that would look really good on your table as a centerpiece?  Then you really need to consider this tasteful and warm looking cottonwood bowl.  Not overly large as the diameter is 11” with a height of 2” and a depth of 1 ¼”.  But, it does hold 5 cups of liquid measured to the brim of the bowl!  One other consideration for this bowl is that it is lightweight.  I have not put it on the scale but I can’t picture it weighing over 2 pounds.  The natural colors of this wood make it a favorite with a lot of people.  The wood was first sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a walnut oil/shellac mix.  This combination gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  I mixed the finish where there was just enough shellac to give the bowl a bit of shine, but not overly so.  This way you can still feel the grain of the wood.  25Nov17  BLCW87  $35.00 and $12.00 S&H

When you first saw the name of this bowl you probably first wondered what a 6 cupper was.  It simply means that it holds 6 cups measured to the brim!  Cottonwood is a soft wood that is also a bit on the fibrous side.  All that means is that sometimes it is very difficult to get a totally smooth sanded surface over the entire bowl.  To me that just adds a bit to the rustic appeal that I do try to preserve in each piece I turn.  The grain patterns in cottonwood are subtle yet very nice.  The natural coloration of this wood varies so much.  You have a light tan mixed with a medium shade of brown and even some gray.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then it received another two coats.  Then it was finished with a walnut oil based wax.  Using this combination gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  This type of finish also lets you feel the grain in the wood.  The bowl is 10 ½” in diameter, 2 ½” high, and 1 ¾” deep.  A great bowl for salads and veggies.  You might even use it as a popcorn bowl.  14Nov17  BLCW85  $35.00 and $12.00 S&H

Now this smallish sized bowl turned from cottonwood ought to catch your eye.  After all look at the natural colors of it.  Certainly a delightful looking piece for sure!  So, don’t pass this up.  You might use it as a candy or nut bowl or even put potpourri in it.   Others might even use it as a catch all bowl for keys and change.  As that this bowl will fit almost anywhere, it’s uses are limitless.  You will see on the outside some minor shallow cracking that occurred in the drying process that I decided to leave for more rustic appearance. It measures 7 ¼” in diameter, 1 ¾” high, and 1 ¼” deep.  The volume measures out to   be 2 cups to the brim.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a walnut oil based wax.  Using a combination such as this gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  8Oct17  BLCW83  $20.00 and $8.00 S&H
