Pecan Turnings

OK, folks!  What will be on this page are serving bowls, display bowls, and serving and display dishes from that fabulous wood called pecan.  So similar to hickory, they are often confused.  The natural beauty of this wood is really something to behold, so take a look and don't be surprised if you are just slightly awed.  OK?

Beautifully Spalted Pecan Wood 2 Tier Dish

This heavily spalted piece is really something else.  First let me say it is all one piece of wood.  No glue or screws here.  Uhuh.  This 2 tier dish may be used for such a variety of things, it will amaze.  Use it for different kinds of nuts like the photos show, or candies, even jewelry!  This dish is certainly rustic in appearance with all the spalting and the worm holes.   The top has a bit of difference in color as it is more from heartwood whereas the bottom is more outer wood.  The wood was all sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a mixture of walnut oil and shellac.  This gives the dish a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  The bottom diameter is 6” with a depth of about a ½”.  The upper diameter is 3 ½” with a depth of ¾”.  The total height of the piece is 3”.  12Mar19  SDP59  $28.50  Free shipping within Continental United States.

Magnificent Pecan Wood Natural Edge Bowl

There comes a time when you see something, you just gotta say “Wow!”.  And, you hear other say “How Rustic Looking!”.  This natural edge bowl turned out of beautiful pecan wood fits all of those descriptions.  And with it’s holding capacity measuring to the lowest side point of 5 cups that is a pretty large amount for this type of bowl.  It does hold liquids though it was not designed for that purpose.  This is a great piece to have on your table for displaying nuts and fruits and all kinds of tasty treats.  I am not gonna mention Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.  OK?  Not gonna mention them.  UhUh.  The diameter of the bowl is 8” with a base diameter of 6”.  The highest wall point is 5 ¾” and the lowest comes to 4 ¼”.  The depth measured to the lowest point is 3”.  The bark was reinforced with clear glue and shellac to try and keep it in place.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil.  The finishing was done with a walnut oil and shellac mixture and then it was all buffed.  For a more rustic and natural appeal I mixed the finish heavier on the walnut oil for a more satin like sheen.  You can also feel the grain in the wood.  24Nov18  NEP38  $40.00 and $5.00 S&H Continental United States

Cute 3 Corner Pecan Bowl

A lot of people will call this 3 corner bowl cute.  OK.  It’s cute.  It’s rustic.  What more can you ask for?  Oh, yeah.  It’s turned from pecan wood.  To tell a little secret on myself, this is actually sort of a failure.  This was going to be a 3 cornered jar, but the lid material did not work out so it became a bowl.  This extremely lightweight bowl is great for putting your pistachios in or other tasty nuts or other treats.  When you add the knot holes and grain pattern of this wood, you just cannot go wrong.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil.  The finishing was done with a mix of walnut oil and shellac, light on the shellac for a more subtle sheen.  Then it was buffed.  The diameter is 6” with a height of 3 ½” and a depth of 2” measured to the lowest point on the side.  The volume measured at 1 ½ cups.  Don’t pass this up!  26Nov18  BLP203  $27.50  Free shipping within Continental United States.

4 Footed Pecan Natural Edge Bowl

Now if this isn’t a rustic gem, I don’t know what is!  Lookie here!  You have natural edge with bark, worm holes, knot holes, spalting.  Did I leave anything out?  The luscious natural colors of this pecan wood are simply fabulous.  The bowl part is only 1 ½” deep on the lowest side.  I thought about trying to get a bit deeper, but with the worm holes I was afraid I might accidentally go through the bottom.  The base is 9” square and the piece has a total height of 4 ¼”.  I didn’t measure the volume of the bowl but I would estimate it to be around 2 cups to the lowest brim area.  The bark received a helping hand to stay intact with some clear glue on the inside of the bowl and out.  The wood was not only sealed but basically saturated with food grade walnut oil.  Then it was finished with walnut oil and shellac mixture with some walnut oil based wax added.  Using a combination like this gives the piece a nice hard natural long lasting finish.  Certainly a one of a kind piece.  17Dec18  NEP39  $42.50 and $5.00 S&H within Continental United States.

I know you hear me say it a lot, but it is a true fact.  Not everybody needs a large bowl.  But pretty much everybody needs a smaller sized bowl.  This bowl fits the size that everybody needs.  With a diameter of 9” and a height of 1 ½” it has a needful size.  When you add to that the depth of 1” and a volume measured at 2 ½ cups, this bowl is quite useful.  Use it as a serving bowl or even as a display bowl for fruits and nuts and such.  The wood was sealed and finished with a micro-crystalline wax that is water and fingerprint resistant.  You can still feel the grain of the wood which to me is a plus.  14Oct18  BLP199  $28.00  and Free Shipping Within the Continental United States

Pecan Wood Natural Edge Centerpiece Bowl

I think most anybody would be really happy having this bowl sitting on their table as a centerpiece.  After all, it has bark and the beautiful color of pecan wood.  One problem that a turner runs into while turning a piece such as this is the final sanding.  Sometimes you have to decide whether you are going to get that particular spot and risk damaging your hand one way or the other, or just get it the best you can.  You will find a couple of spots on this piece that are like that.  On the ends of the main body you can have some nuts or whatever sitting there as it is concave for that purpose.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a walnut oil/shellac mixture giving a nice hard long lasting finish.  The bark was reinforced with clear glue.  The main body is 10 ¾” long and 9” wide.  The bowl is 6 ½” in diameter, 2 ¾” at the highest point, 1 ¾” deep and has a volume measuring at 1 ½ cups.  You not find another bowl like this one.  17Jul18  NEP36  $42.00  and $8.00 S&H

Gorgeous Pecan Natural Edge Bowl

Oh, the natural beauty of a bowl with bark still on it.  How can one pass it up?  I normally do not have a base quite as large as this but I didn’t want to jeopardize that great looking knot in it.  So, it has a bit larger base but so what?  A knot like that is worth it.  This bowl has a nice capacity of 2 cups measured to the lower brim, which does not mean that it is limited to that amount of your favorite treats that will just pile up in it.  The diameter of the bowl is 7 ¼” and the height is 4 ½”.  The depth came to 2 ½”.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil.  The bark was reinforced with clear drying glue to help keep it in place.  Then the bowl was sprayed with 2 coats of shellac.  The spray was used to help penetrate and keep the bark intact.  Do not pass this up.  10Jun18  NEP35  $35.00 and $11.00 S&H

9 1/2" Rustic Gem Pecan Bowl

Dazzling Spalted Pecan Bowl

The natural color and all the heavy spalting in this bowl certainly does make it rather dazzling.  And with a volume capacity of 5 cups you will find many uses for it.  Use it as a serving bowl as it does hold liquids or as a display bowl for fruits and nuts as the photos suggest.  Fill it with M&M’s or just anything that you might want to.  The diameter of the bowl is 10” with a height of 2 ½” and a depth of 1 ½”.  With a semi pedestal foot the depth is right where it needs to be.  I burned a line in the foot only for decorative purposes.  You will find some natural defects in the wood such as worm holes which do add rustic characteristics.  The wood was first sealed with a couple of coats of food grade walnut oil.  The finishing work was done with a mixture of walnut oil and shellac heavy on the shellac for more sheen.  This combo gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  12Sep17  BLP163  $30.00 and $12.00 S&H
